1989 gmc jimmy : My brother-in-law just bought a used 1989 GMC Jimmy with71,000 miles on the 4.3. The guy before him took greatcare of it. Does anyone have any items that he shouldwatch out for with this particular truck? Any horror stories of things going wrong this model? No *horror* stories. I have an 89 2.8 manual blazer and the only thingthat I don't like (that and it's old enough to get rid of anyway) is thetransmission and the whole drive train just being very loose. But I thinkthat really had to do with the fact that I got mine after it was rebuiltfrom a flipped Blazer. My truck burns oil like theres no tomorrow, thoughand the brakes are a bit iffy sometimes. But other than those things, itsa great little truck. It has *never* quit on me.I have an '88 4x4 automatic with about 40K on it. The only major service Ihad so far was to replace the front CV boots and fix a leak from the frontdifferential seal.....about $400 total. There is one thing to watch for....There is an oil hose that runs from theblock to the remote filter in the left front fender. I had this hose fittingcome loose at the block and start leaking a bit. All it needed it tighteningup. 1989 gmc jimmy : I've been having a problem with my 1989 GMC Jimmy K1500 thatI hope someone might be able to help me out on.The problem is while I'm in 2 wheel drive the front drive shaftstarts to spin which causes some loud grinding noises in thefront differential, at least it sounds like it's in there. The problem seems to happen most often when it truck is cold. But recently it happened twice while after driving for 30 minutes. In these 2 cases it started after I came to a hard stop. Sometimes it willgo away if I throw it in 4 wheel drive and then back out and sometimesnot and I have to drive it in 4 wheel.I checked the fluid in the transfer case and it was about 1/2 quartlow. I have 90K miles on it so it was time to change the fluid whichI did and I still have the problem.I'm not sure where the problem is originating. I can't tell if thetransfer case is causing the drive shaft to spin or if the fronthubs are locking-in causing the drive shaft to spin.I've had the truck in the shop for the last 2 days but they can'treproduce the problem so they can't tell where the problem is originating. The mechanic has taken it home overnight to put some extra miles inbut still nothing. I know as soon as I pick it up tonight it willstart acting up of course. 1989 gmc jimmy : Does anyone out there have any ideas of what this problem may beor what I can do when the problem occurs to track down where itis coming from? From: ()Subject: Re: Transfercase problem - GMC Jimmy K1500 Newsgroups: Date: 1995/12/14 In Daniel McCoole <mccoole> writes:]The problem is while I'm in 2 wheel drive the front drive shaft]starts to spin which causes some loud grinding noises in the]front differential, at least it sounds like it's in there. Have the wheel bearings repacked, or do it yourself, it's not that hard. When you do, look at the condition of all theparts of locking hub mechanisms. If anything looks worn or otherwise messed up,get a set of hubs from a junkyard (if you want the automatic hubs), or buy a newset at an auto parts store (usually they only stock the manual ones). 1989 gmc jimmy : From: ()Subject: Re: Transfercase problem - GMC Jimmy K1500 Newsgroups: Date: 1995/12/16 In article (Kevin Tapperson) wrote:Actually, '88 and later GMC 4x4s don't have hubs like the pre-'88 kserires (with the exception of a few crew cabs) but rather use a centralaxle disconnect system which is inside the front diff. It consists of asolenoid activated shift collar that connects/disconnects one of the axleshafts to the diff. When disconnected, the front driveshaft and ring andpinion gears don't spin, but the half shafts and the pinions inside thediff do. One possibility is that this collar isn't properly retracting andmay be close enough to engagement so that any substantial jostleing (sp?),such as hard breaking, might cause it to grind a bit. In normal operation, when switching to 4x4, the front drive shaft is spining because the xfercase is engaged and thus the collar is engaging 2 shafts that are spinningat the same speed; hence no grind. But if it accidentally gets nudged intoengagement when the xfer case is still in 2x4 mode, lots of grinding willensue since the shafts are spinning in the opposite direction with other.
